The Bacalan River

The Bacalan River is a naturally abundant freshwater river in the Municipality of Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay. It originates from Bacalan Cave and is fed by tributaries flowing from the eastern quadrant of Sibugay province, giving it a strong, reliable year-round flow.


Since 2014, AWSDC has secured legal rights to the water source, conducted feasibility studies, and built the pumping and filtration infrastructure to transform this natural resource into safe, deliverable bulk water.

Designed and built by AWSDC — the first of its kind in the region. Processes up to 900 cubic meters of raw water per day into safe, potable water. Has passed all 7 authorized water quality tests.

Water Storage Reservoir

1,500 cubic meter storage tank that holds treated water before distribution. Provides buffer capacity and ensures a stable supply even during maintenance periods.

Main Transmission Pipeline

8,000 meters of 8-inch HDPE pipeline running from the Bacalan River pumping station to the national highway — the backbone of the water supply system.

/04

Power System

A combination of diesel generator and solar energy, providing continuous but currently limited (approx. 7 hours/day) pumping capacity. Planned upgrades will extend to 24-hour operation.

The pilot filtration facility has now passed all 7 authorized water quality tests administered by relevant authorities. This means every metric, from turbidity to bacteriological safety, meets the standards required for safe domestic water use.

How it Works

Raw water is drawn from the Bacalan River by a 30 HP Grundfos pump

Water is lifted approximately 90 meters in elevation through the main pipeline

It passes through the multi-stage filtration facility, removing sediment, particles, and contaminants

Treated water is stored in the 1,500 cubic meter reservoir

From the reservoir, bulk water is delivered to the distribution network
